An international driver's license that can be used to drive in japan is an international 

driver's license issued by a country that is a party to the Geneva Convention and 

conforms to the format specified by the convention. Even if an international driver's

license is issued by a country that is a party to the Geneva Convention, you cannot

drive in japan with an international drive's license issued in a format based on other

conventions(Vienna Convention'etc.).

To drive with an international driving license, you must meet the following requirements:

Does not violate the so-called ''３-month rule'' stipulated in Article 

107-2 of the Road Traffic Act.

If you re-land within 3 months from the of departure

A person who is recorded in the Basic Resident Register(foreign nationals staying in the medium to long term, etc.) leaves japan after receiving departure confirmation orre-entry permission, and obtains a new internationaldriver's license during a stay of less

than 3 months. If you land again after obtaining a license, you will not be able to drive

in japan because the day of landing (returning to your home country) will not be the

starting date of the driving period on your international driver's license.

(Note) The same applies to those who left japan after receiving a refugee travel

document.

If you re-land after more than 3 months from the date of departure

People who are recorded in the Basic Resident Register (foreign nationals staying 

medium to long term, etc.) leave japan after receiving departure confirmation or re-

entry permission, and obtain a new international driver's license during their stay of 3

months or more. If you land again after obtaining an international driver's license, the

day of landing (returning to your home country) will be the stating date of the driving period of your internationals driver's license.
